What is Ecological Restoration?

Ecosystems are dynamic communities of plants, animals, and microorganisms interacting with their physical environment as a functional unit. These communities can be damaged, degraded, or destroyed by human activity. Ecological restoration is the process of assisting the recovery of an ecosystem.

Unpacking the Process of Ecological Restoration

Ecological restoration does not happen overnight. Like any good land management, it is a multi-step, multi-year process that involves multiple moving parts, seasonal requirements, and cooperation from Mother Nature and the weather. This is the process NRP most commonly uses when consulting on restoration projects, and provides a good starting point for us to explore restoration further.

SER - Midwest Great Lakes Chapter

The Midwest-Great Lakes Chapter of SER was established in March 2008 and serves Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio, and Wisconsin. Our mission is to promote the science and practice of ecological restoration to assist with the recovery and management of degraded ecosystems throughout the Midwestern and Great Lakes region of the USA.
